Social Needs Evidence Map
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) commissioned a systematic scoping review of studies on social needs interventions — adverse social conditions, identified from patients’ perspectives, that are associated with poor health. As lead developer, I designed and developed an interactive evidence map to summarize its findings. Users can filter studies by social need addressed, study population, study design, study quality, and intervention setting, and reorganize the display by population characteristics or type of outcome. Individual studies can be reviewed in detail, and any set of matching studies can be downloaded as a list.
The project was a collaboration between the University of Miami’s School of Communication, where I was teaching at the time, MDB, Inc., and RTI International. I worked with Alberto Cairo, Barbara Millet, and Gilberto Leon to design, develop, and evaluate the visualization.
